Tuesday Evenings, 6.30-9.30 pm, The Art Stables N3 2SX.

Dates: January 13, 20, 27

February 3, 10, 24th (half term 17th)

March 3, 10, 17, 24

Course Description:

This term, we will reintroduce colour into the classroom after focusing exclusively on building a drawing foundation last term. Students will alternate between drawing and painting over the 10-week course.

Through the practice of premier coup (one-shot drawings and paintings), we will work from junk-pile still-life setups—haphazard constructions designed to disrupt ingrained habits of seeing. These exercises are intended to awaken students to abstraction, perceptual observation, and the limitless potential of beautiful composition.

In the second half of the term, we will work from the live model using a similar approach—composing with fragments of form rather than the figure in its entirety. This approach pushes us further toward abstraction, challenges our preconceptions, and allows students to develop a unique vocabulary of form rooted in deep observation.

While continuing to build a strong geometric handling of light and form, we will begin introducing colour spots into our conversation. Students will be encouraged to marry their drawing foundation with rich colour that reflects the tonal qualities of ´perceptual’ observation.

Although this is a weekly course, consistent independent practice is essential. The collective nature of the group, along with the NLG WhatsApp mentorship, provides an ideal environment for committed exploration.

This course is open to all levels, but is especially suited to those seeking serious engagement with pictorial language—something only achievable through dedicated practice.

Capacity: The course is limited to 12 easels.

Cost: £550. Drop in fee £60 (subject to availibility)
