Course Description:
This term, we focus on charcoal drawing for the duration of the 10-week course.
Through the practice of premier coup (one-shot drawings), we will work from junk-pile still-life setups—haphazard constructions designed to disrupt ingrained habits of seeing. These set ups are intended to awaken students to abstraction, perceptual observation, and the limitless potential of beautiful composition.
In the second half of the term, we will work from the live model using a similar approach—composing with fragments of form rather thanthe figure in its entirety. This approach pushes us further toward abstraction, challenges our preconceptions, and allows students to develop a unique vocabulary of form rooted in deep observation.
Although this is a weekly course, consistent independent practice is essential. The collective nature of the group, along with the NLG WhatsApp mentorship, provides an ideal environment for committed exploration.
This course is open to all levels, but is especially suited to those seeking serious engagement with pictorial language—something only achievable through dedicated practice.
Capacity: The course is limited to 12 easels.
Cost: £550. Drop in fee £60 (subject to availibility)
