Course Description:

This term, we will reintroduce colour into the studio after spending last term focusing exclusively on building a strong drawing foundation. Students will alternate between drawing and painting throughout the 10-week course.

Through the practice of premier coup (one-shot drawings and paintings), we will work from “junk-pile” still-life setups—haphazard constructions designed to disrupt ingrained habits of seeing. Transcription will also be a primary focus this term, with students taking a deep, serious dive into the mastery of great painters of the past. We transcribe rather than simply copy to emphasise reinvention and to strengthen our capacity to extract the essential qualities of these great works—qualities that have always been a vital source of knowledge for any serious painter.

Throughout this immersive course, students will be encouraged to marry their drawing foundation with rich colour that reflects the tonal sensitivities of perceptual observation. Drawing on the teachings of Charles Hawthorne and the Jerusalem Studio School, we will begin introducing colour spots into our working process.

Although this is a weekly course, consistent independent practice is essential. The collective nature of the group, combined with the NLG WhatsApp mentorship, provides an ideal environment for committed exploration. This course is open to all levels, but is especially suited to those seeking serious engagement with pictorial language—something achievable only through dedicated practice.
