December 2
Course Description:
This term, we will focus on creating and developing a strong foundation in drawing, which lies at the core of all the work we will undertake throughout the year.
Through the practice of premier coup (one-shot drawings in charcoal), we will work from junk pile still-life set-ups—haphazardly designed constructions aimed at disrupting ingrained habits of seeing. These exercises are intended to awaken students to abstraction, perceptual observation, and the limitless potential of beautiful composition.
In the second half of the term, we will work from the figure, using a similar approach—composing with fragments of form. This method pushes us further toward abstraction, challenges our preconceptions, and allows students to develop a unique vocabulary of form—one rooted in deep observation.
Returning students will also be encouraged to construct their own still-life set-ups, and to alternate responsibility for the main junk pile and figure posing.
Although this is a weekly course, consistent independent practice is essential. The collective nature of the group, along with the NLG WhatsApp mentorship, provides the ideal environment for committed exploration.
This course is open to all levels, but is especially suited for those seeking serious engagement with pictorial language, something only achievable through dedicated practice.
Capacity: The course is limited to 12 easels.
Cost: £550. Drop in fee £60 (subject to availibility)
